Riverside Drive bridge opened April 6

After six months of detours, motorists can cross the Riverside Drive bridge over Marsh Creek.

The bridge opened April 6 in the late afternoon. The bridge on Riverside Drive failed in late September when floodwaters undermined the structure.

The city of Sandy Springs held a 4 p.m. ribbon cutting on April 6 at the northern end of the bridge, towards Dalrymple Road.

“We are so glad to get this bridge reopened,” Mickey McGee, an engineer with the state transportation department, said in an April 5 release. “This roadway is a very well-traveled artery in this area, and I know the local residents will be pleased that it’s open as well.”

The approximately $900,000 project was completed using emergency funds from the Federal Highway Administration, Sandy Springs Director of Public Works Tom Black said in a March interview.

The reconstructed bridge will feature 14-foot-wide travel lanes with sidewalks on both sides, according to a city of Sandy Springs release April 5. The bridge was lengthened by five feet, and the elevation of the bridge was increased six inches over Marsh Creek. Tidwell Construction Company was the contractor.
