North Atlanta High construction moving along
A contractor for Atlanta Public Schools removed three rows of glass from a sky bridge as part of renovations that will transform the former IBM campus into a new North Atlanta High.
Work crews are gutting the insides of an IBM campus on Northside Parkway that will be the new home of North Atlanta High in 2013.
According to a weekly report for the week of July 13-20, the construction crews:
– Removed three rows of glass on the building’s sky bridge.
– Gutted the interiors of three floors.
– Cut a hole in the roof of the Hillside building on the campus, allowing for machines to be flown in by crane.
By the end of the month, contractors report they will gut more floors, begin removal of the sky bridge sections and begin removing asbestos from the building.
The school is expected to open in August 2013 and has a $71 million construction budget, according to the latest APS figures.
District 4 Board of Education member Nancy Meister said people should visit the Atlanta Public Schools’ website for regular construction updates.
“As with any type of construction, there are phases that look like little is happening, and other times when it seems a transformation has taken place overnight,” Meister said. “The interior demolition is advancing which is something none of us can see in a driveby.”
