A 3-year-old Sandy Springs boy shot himself in the thumb after crawling beneath a bed and finding his father’s pistol, Sandy Springs police reported April 2.

The boy’s parents, who were home at the time, took the child to Children’s Hospital of Atlanta after the April 1 accidental shooting at the Village Creek Trace residence of his mother, police said in a press release. The boy was treated and later released, police said. Police were contacted by hospital social workers.

His mother, Shaunell Tameka Robinson, 28 was charged with reckless conduct, police reported. The weapon, a .380 pistol that belonged the child’s father, Kevin Kennard of Marietta, was seized, police said in the release.
