A festival and parade to commemorate Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, will be held Saturday, Nov. 4, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Brookhaven’s Northeast Plaza, 3307 Buford Highway.

Community altars honoring the dead will be part of the Nov. 4 event. (We Love BuHi)

The Día de los Muertos Festival and Parade is presented by We Love BuHi and is sponsored by Mailchimp and The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta. The Day of the Dead is a traditional Mexican and Latin American holiday to honor and remember deceased family members and ancestors.

As part of the celebration, attendees will be able to see community altars honoring the departed, take part in arts and crafts, listen to traditional music, have their faces painted, buy food and sample traditional sweet bread and treats donated by local bakery Pan Paleta.

After the sun sets, a one-mile round-trip walking procession will take place on Buford Highway. The procession will be accompanied by a bicycle parade in partnership with bike sharing company Relay Bike Share.

Community members are invited to participate by building and decorating their own altars for a Community Altar Contest. Guest judges include the Consul General of Mexico in Atlanta, Javier Díaz de León. Individuals, families and groups are encouraged to register online at welovebuhi.com/diadelosmuertos by Friday, Oct. 27. Prizes and gift cards will be awarded.
