A contractor for Sandy Springs in September will begin inspecting the 3,300 fire hydrants that are located in public right of way.

Since the city of Sandy Springs incorporated in December 2005, it has ordered only one inspection of the fire hydrants located along public roads and called “public” hydrants by city officials. Those hydrants are owned and maintained by the Atlanta Watershed Department.

Beginning this budget year, Sandy Springs will conduct two inspections of the public hydrants a year.

Green light: Time for a change … for the worse

Someone – perhaps fed up with Sandy Springs’ traffic congestion — felt it was time for a change.

So he or she broke into the traffic signal cabinet, that silver box that controls the signal time, and added 45 to 50 seconds to the traffic signals at Johnson Ferry and Abernathy roads, as well as Abernathy and Brandon Mill roads, said Chris Waters, Sandy Springs traffic services manager.

But their sneaky efforts were in vain.

Waters said lengthening the time the lights were

Sandy Springs Dist. 3 City Councilman Chip Collins and Dist. 6 City Councilwoman Karen Meinzen McEnerny will host a public meeting Sept. 1 to discuss residential burglaries.

The “town hall” meeting is to be held in the theater at Holy Innocents Episcopal School, 805 Mount Vernon Highway, and scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.

The discussion will focus on burglaries between June and August.

“This meeting will provide valuable information from the Sandy Springs Police Department on how to protect yourself from being a victim of burglary,” McEnerny said. “Our community police officers, who patrol these streets every day, will be on hand to address the issues that affect the residents of these areas. It will be a time where you can address questions to the police leadership and officers directly.”

Static for upgraded radio system

Police Chief Terry Sult

It may take longer than police first thought for Sandy Springs to upgrade its failing analog radio system.

Sandy Springs Police Chief Terry Sult said in April and May that outdated radio infrastructure was the department’s biggest issue.

“The noise and the interference on the radios has been such that it has been very difficult to hear and understand,” Sult said.

If a police officer or firefighter gets into trouble, Sult said, “they may only have one chance to get that radio, and if you can’t understand them because of some noise in the radio system, that can be the difference in life and death. It’s extremely high-priority.”

As an option to upgrade to a digital system, Fulton County

Some ways to protect yourself from ATM thieves’ prying eyes

Category : Brookhaven Public Safety, Buckhead Public Safety, Sandy Springs Public Safety

By Senior Officer Larry Jacobs
Crime Prevention Division, SSPD

When protecting your account against ATM thieves, it’s all about awareness, paying attention and understanding risks. There are 400,000 ATMs, and every one of them is susceptible to fraud.

  1. Cover your password with your hand. Hidden cameras are disguised so they can pick up your password. If you protect it, ATM thieves can’t access your account.
  2. Use familiar ATMs, and limit your visits. ATMs in dimly lighted spots or used late at night could be more susceptible to fraud, while ATMs under video surveillance can be safer. Stay away from ATMs at retail stores or restaurants. Recently, skimming devices were found on ATMs in a popular grocery store in Georgia. Airports, convenience stores or kiosks are equally vulnerable to ATM thieves. Still, even highly trafficked ATMs outside a bank branch have been targeted by thieves. Also, try to limit your visits to the ATM. With frequency, there’s risk.
  3. Check bank balances frequently. Given the two-day window for reporting fraud, it pays to check your account frequently. If you don’t report fraud within 60 days, you have unlimited liability. Sign up for alerts and notice unusual withdrawals. With credit cards there are more protections in place, and you can dispute charges.
  4. Observe the ATM. Consumers should look at an ATM to make sure a card slot is legitimate and not tacked on. Look for things that strike you. Some people have felt that when they inserted a card, something went awry. In that case, try another ATM.

Sandy Springs Police Blotter – Reports dated through Aug. 13

The following information was provided to the Reporter by the Sandy Springs Police Department from its records and is presumed to be accurate.

Robbery

400 block of Morgan Falls Road 30350 - A man reported he was at the recycling center at about 11:30 at night, getting boxes out of a dumpster, when he was robbed by two men. That’s awfully late to be at a closed recycling center. Don’t put yourselves in vulnerable situations.

4500 block of Roswell Road 30342 - A man reported that about 1 a.m. Aug. 11 he exited a bus and was walking to his apartment when three men in a white truck pulled up, pulled a gun and took his wallet.

ChatComm wraps first year, nearly meets goals

Category : Sandy Springs Community, Sandy Springs Public Safety

By Amy Wenk
amywenk @ reporternewspapers . net

Just before midnight on Aug. 31, 2009, call takers answered the first call at ChatComm, the 911 center Sandy Springs has operated with Johns Creek since the cities left Fulton County 911.

The call came from a woman worried about a creature wiggling around her front door. ChatComm call takers dispatched police officers, who, on the scene, identified the animal as a snake. To the relief of the homeowner, the snake was removed.

There have been other surprising calls. The center answers about 9,000 calls a month and around 43 calls in a busy hour. Call takers, in the past year, handled a storm of calls from the September flood and even coached a person in delivering a baby on the side of the road.

“It’s a rollercoaster ride from one day to the next,” said Joseph Estey, ChatComm’s deputy director of operations and human resources.

“We’re making a lot of progress,” Sandy Springs Police Chief Terry Sult said. “We are starting to hit a lot of the benchmarks we have set up.”

But ChatComm has yet to make

Police look for armed robbery suspects

Category : Sandy Springs Public Safety

Sandy Springs police have released a photograph of a man they believe is one of two men wanted in connection with an Aug. 10 armed robbery.

On Aug. 10, officers responded to a call at 470 Morgan Falls Road where a man said two men had robbed him. One robber was armed with a black semi-automatic handgun, police said.

On Aug. 11, a man used the victim’s credit card to purchase gasoline and other items at the Quik Trip at 7884 Roswell Road.

Police said they believe the man pictured in the security camera video was one of the robbers. The man is described as in his 20s and about 6 feet, 2 inches tall. Police say he weighs between 180 and 190 pounds.

The other suspect in the case, police said, is in his 20s and about 5 feet, 7 inches tall. Police say he weighs between 140 and 150 pounds.

Both men were wearing bandanas, police said, when they robbed the man on Morgan Falls Road.

Anyone with information about the whereabouts of the two men should call Detective D. Romero at (770) 551-3312.

Police said the men are considered armed and dangerous.
