The Fulton County District Attorneys Office confirmed on Feb. 3 that Zone 2 Community Prosecutor Hannah Chung is leaving the office to devote more time to raising her young children.

Chung started working at the DA’s office in 2006 and in 2010 was appointed to serve as community prosecutor. Community prosecutors are a concept used nationally to increase visibility of the DA’s office in local communities. Chung was a highly visible presence at Neighborhood Planning Unit and Civic Association meetings in Buckhead, giving regular updates about the results of local cases the DA prosecuted.

“Hannah Chung has been a dedicated public servant to the Citizens of Fulton County as a prosecutor for six years,” said Fulton County District Attorney Paul Howard Jr. “We are grateful for her service, particularly as the Zone 2 Community Prosecutor. She has left our office to devote more time to her precious children ages 2 and 4. We recognize this was a tough decision for her, but we fully support her role as a proud mother and hope that once her children have gotten a little older, Ms. Chung would return to the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office. We would most certainly welcome her once more with open arms.”

Chung said it was not an easy choice, but it was the right one for her family.

“Leaving the Fulton County District Attorney’s office was indeed a tough decision but a choice I ultimately had to make for the benefit of my children,” Chung said. “Serving as the Zone 2 Community Prosecutor has been one of the most rewarding assignments of my career. I am thankful for the community’s support  and proud to have been given the opportunity to serve.”

District 8 Atlanta City Councilwoman Yolanda Adrean said Chung was a key component of Zone 2 having the biggest reduction in crime in 2011, when crime dropped 13 percent overall, topping all other police zones  according to the Atlanta Police Department.

“She’s been a very valuable part of the team and she’ll be dearly missed by the community,” Adrean said.

The nonprofit Sandy Springs Police Benevolent Fund will host its charity invitational on March 26 at the Cherokee Town & Country Club, an all-day event to benefit officers and their families.

“When an SSPD police officer’s child needed special surgery, an SSPD officer unexpectedly required surgery, an SSFD fireman suffered from a serious illness, or a Georgia State Trooper was killed in the line of duty, the Sandy Springs Police Benevolent Fund was there and prepared to help,” the brochure for the tournament says. “Fortunately, the Sandy Springs Police Benevolent Fund is not limited to SSPD officers. Additionally, it has reached across several jurisdictional lines to help all public safety officers who have been in need.”

The tournament will be a competition between four-person teams. Sponsorships range from $500 to $25,000.

District 3 Sandy Springs Councilman Chip Collins, who serves on the advisory board for the tournament, is offering his constituents an additional incentive to participate: beer. Collins told constituents via email he’d buy a round of drinks or some other gift for the team in his district with the lowest score.

“I have pledged to get them five foursomes (20 golfers) from the good folks of District 3, so I hope you’ll help me accomplish that goal,” Collins said in the email. ” … I think this will be a great opportunity to play golf, socialize and rub elbows with your neighbors, community leaders, and our friends on the force who put their lives on the line for us everyday.   I hope you’ll join us.”
