The DeKalb County school board voted Feb. 15 to appoint Eugene Walker as chairman of the budget committee. He replaces board member Jesse “Jay” Cunningham, who withdrew from the position.
Cunningham withdrew when it was disclosed that he had pleaded guilty to stealing $12,500 from McDonald’s in 1982.
Walker, who was re-elected to the District 9 school board seat last year, has faced his own problems in the past few years. He became the focus of an ethics discussion that surrounding the Sembler Co.’s bid for a $52 million tax abatement for its Town Brookhaven development. Walker announced on Aug. 18, 2009, that he resigned his position on the DeKalb Development Authority, which he held at the same time as serving on the school board.
Walker drew complaints from residents and public officials for championing the unprecedented tax break for the Sembler Co., which had donated $18,000 to Walker’s successful campaign for the school board seat.
