A Senate committee has approved the charter for a city of Brookhaven.

The State and Local Government Operations Committee voted 4-3 to approve the bill. The bill will now be sent to the Senate Rules Committee before going to the floor of the Senate for a vote.

The committee approved a version of the bill that changes the name of the city from Ashford to Brookhaven.

“We are well on our way to the citizens having their say in July,” said Rep. Mike Jacobs, R-DeKalb, who sponsored the bill to create the north DeKalb city.
