It’s the start of a new school year for students in much of metro Atlanta.

Aug. 13 is the first day of the 2012-2013 school year for the DeKalb County School District and Fulton County Schools.

Fulton becomes the state’s largest charter district this year, school officials said during an Aug. 7 press conference at Riverwood International Charter High School.

“We truly believe this charter process will allow us to be more innovative,” Fulton Superintendent Robert Avossa said. “Public schools for too long have been ‘one size fits all.’”

Students in Dunwoody will notice new principals at Chestnut Elementary, Dunwoody Elementary, Vanderlyn Elementary and Dunwoody High School.  Woodward Elementary School in Brookhaven will also have a new principal this year.

Atlanta Public Schools started the school year on Aug. 6.
