The Parent Teacher Organization of Dunwoody Elementary School and faculty of the Centennial Arts Academy in Gainesville, Ga., along with the DeKalb County Office of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice have reached out to the students, teachers and staff of Fairington Elementary School in DeKalb County with an offer to collect school supplies to replace those lost in the recent fire at Fairington.

“Our hearts go out to our DeKalb friends at Fairington Elementary,” said Jennifer Sanders, principal of Dunwoody Elementary Schools. “The DeKalb School District may be large, but we are still family. We take care of each other.”

On Jan. 17, around 5 p.m. a suspicious fire engulfed a kindergarten classroom at Fairington Elementary School. Although the fire was contained to one classroom, the main school building experienced extensive water, smoke and soot damage. A team of more than 100 workers have been working 24-hour shifts to repair the damage. Students are expected to be able to return the week of January 26.

Avery D. Niles, Commissioner of the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice, said, “We have been local partners with this elementary school for a long time.  Our speakers go and talk to the Fairington students every year about DJJ’s Bullying Program and Gang Intervention and Career Days.” Commissioner Niles added, “Their teachers and staff are really committed to those kids and they make sure they get what they need.  Now they need our help.  We’re going to find a way to get it to them.”

“It is not often that children get to do something for other children,” said Dallas Thompson, fifth grade teacher at Centennial Arts Academy. “We hope that this will make a powerful impact not only on the children at Fairington, but also on the children at Centennial.”
