A letter with white powder was delivered Wednesday morning to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s headquarters in Dunwoody but has been determined to not be hazardous, according to a story in the newspaper.
A hazmat team responded the AJC building in Dunwoody in response to a suspicious letter with white powder in it.
“The envelope was promptly sealed in [a] plastic bag and then in [a] containment box,” according to a memo that went out to employees. “As well, the ventilation system in the basement was closed off.” The building is located in the 200 block of Perimeter Center Parkway and was not evacuated.
The material was finally deemed not hazardous.
UPDATE: The FBI is investigating the incident. In an email statement, Special Agent Stephen Emmett said the letter with white powder is similar to one received by the Georgia Bar Association on April 12.
“Dunwoody Police, DeKalb County Police and Fire, along with personnel from the FBI’s Hazardous Materials (HAZMAT) team, responded to a white powder letter at the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC) located at 223 Perimeter Center Parkway, Dunwoody, Georgia,” Emmett said.
“This appears to be similar to the letter received yesterday at the Georgia Bar Association’s Marietta Street, Atlanta office. Both letters appear to have been sent from an inmate at a corrections facility in Georgia. Substances in both incidents tested negative for any bio hazards in the preliminary screening,” he said.
